2019 HockomockSports Volleyball Awards

Canton senior Taylor Harris has been selected as the 2019 HockomockSports.com Volleyball Player of the Year. The Canton outside hitter was integral to the Bulldogs continuing their dominance in the Davenport division, clinching a second sectional title, and the program’s first-ever Div. 2 state championship.

Harris was also selected as the Hockomock League MVP by the coaches after leading the league in kills and being an all-around standout. Despite a number of new faces in the lineup, the Bulldogs won their 13th league title in 14 seasons.

“Taylor plays her position with skill, confidence, and poise,” said Canton coach Pat Cawley. “She is explosive to the ball, hits with power, sees the court better than most high school players and has worked hard on her defense. Taylor played well under extreme pressure. Most importantly, Taylor is a supportive and encouraging teammate, and an unassuming leader on and off the court.”

Canton returned only one starter (Harris) from last year’s team that reached the Central final and had to overcome several injuries, but Harris pulled everything together with her dominant all-around game. She was the top hitter in the state, recording 434 kills. She was also strong on the defensive side with 21 blocks, 224 digs, and 398 serve receptions. Harris also had 41 aces, putting 92 percent of her serves in play.

“Taylor is that rare player who never has to rotate off the court,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “No matter where she’s lined up, Taylor is going to make plays that few others can. It was far more than just the hitting, she was the leader of the team and encouraged everyone on the court to keep pushing all the way to a state title.”

Harris is the fourth Canton player to win this honor. She follows Elizabeth Hamilton (2015), Erin Proctor (2014), and Avery Devoe (2013) as Bulldogs to be named Player of the Year. She also ends a run of three straight Players of the Year from the Kelley-Rex division (King Philip’s Sydney Phillips in 2016 and 2017 and Franklin’s Lauren McGrath last season).

Honorable Mentions: Allie Kemp (Oliver Ames), Catherine Waldeck (King Philip), Ally Bonnet-Eymard (Franklin)

2019 HockomockSports Volleyball Awards

Franklin sophomore Cailyn Mackintosh has been selected as the 2019 HockomockSports.com Volleyball Underclassman of the Year. Mackintosh stepped in as the setter for the Panthers and helped them earn a share of their second straight Kelley-Rex division title.

Mackintosh was one of the league leaders this season with 487 assists and 44 aces, emerging as a standout passer and giving the Panthers no drop-off from the graduation of 2018 HockomockSports.com Player of the Year Lauren McGrath. She also added 94 digs, showing off a strong all-around game.

“Cailyn had big shoes to fill this season, and boy did she do just that!” said Franklin coach Kelsey Weymouth. “I had high hopes for her going into this season and she exceeded my expectations. As a sophomore, her volleyball IQ is right up there with the seniors, so she knew where to put the ball and when. I look forward to her growth the next two years!”

HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry said, “Cailyn didn’t seem like a first-year varsity player this season. She knew where she wanted to go with the ball and she was able to spread it around, allowing every on the front line to get touches. I expect that Franklin will build its attack around Cailyn for the next couple of years.”

Mackintosh is the second Franklin player to be honored as Underclassman of the Year, following McGrath in 2016. She is also the third setter to win the award in the past four seasons, including McGrath and Oliver Ames’ Allie Kemp (2017).

Honorable Mention: Julia Kelly (Mansfield), Sarah Brogioli (Milford), Hadley Rhodes (Oliver Ames)

Coach of the Year

Coach of the Year

Pat Cawley
Pat Cawley

Canton head coach Pat Cawley has been selected as the 2019 HockomockSports.com Volleyball Coach of the Year. Cawley led the Bulldogs to their 13th league title in the past 14 years, to a second straight sectional final, and to the program’s first-ever Div. 2 state championship.

After graduating all but one starter from last year’s D2 Central finalists and battling injuries throughout the season, including at the setter position, Cawley was able to put together a lineup that made program history. She secured the 200th win of her career in the season opener and continued Canton’s dominance in the league.

In the playoffs, she led Canton to a four-set win over Westboro in the Central final, just the program’s second-ever Central crown, and wins over a pair of undefeated teams (Minnechaug and Danvers) to seal the state title.

“Even with a roster filled with new faces and relatively inexperienced players, Pat was able to pull everything together,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “There were a lot of learning moments during the regular season, but once the playoffs hit the Bulldogs clicked into gear and played their best volleyball. It was an amazing run.”

This is the second time that Cawley has received this award. She was also named Coach of the Year in 2016 and is the first volleyball coach to earn this honor multiple times and joins boys hockey coach Brian Shuman as one of two Canton coaches to be named coach of the year multiple times in their respective sports.

Honorable Mention: Chelsea Cunningham (Oliver Ames), Kelsey Weymouth (Franklin), Kristen Geuss (King Philip)
