Baseball
Division 1

#12 Franklin, 5 @ #5 Xaverian, 3 – FinalAfter falling behind in the first inning, Franklin rallied to take the lead with two runs in the fourth and added three key insurance runs an inning later to score an upset on the road at Xaverian. The Hawks used two hits in the first inning to gain the lead but Franklin starter DJ Silverstein allowed just one more hit over the next four innings to keep the Hawks’ offense at bay. In the top of the fourth, Zach Winer (single), Sean Kryzak (error), and Patrick Luizzi (single) all reached with one out to load the bases and Owen Pennini brought the tying run home on a ground out. Senior Cole Sidwell followed with a clutch two-out single to bring in one more run to give the Panthers their first lead of the game. Silverstein worked around a two-out walk in the bottom half and Franklin’s offense went right back to work in the top of the fifth. Joey Goguen sent an RBI double to right to score Drake McAlpine (3-for-3) from first, Kryzak plated courtesy runner James Amaru with a sac fly, and senior Jack McCahill delivered a big two-out single to right to bring Winer (walk) home. Xaverian loaded the bases in the sixth and scored once on a sac fly but reliever Owen Lewis got back-to-back infield outs to escape the jam. #12 Franklin will travel to Hockomock rival #4 King Philip on Saturday at 3:30 for a Division 1 quarterfinal game.

Softball
Division 1

#5 Bishop Feehan, 7 @ #4 Attleboro, 4 – FinalClick here for a Photo Gallery from this game. Feehan used a three-run rally in the top of the fourth to beat the Bombardiers and reach the D1 Final Four. The Shamrocks took the lead in the first when Bella Silva singled to center, scoring Madolyn Coupal (leadoff single). The lead lasted three batters, as Attleboro plated a pair in the bottom half. Jenna Callahan (3-for-4) punched one through the left side and, with one out, sophomore Lola Ronayne added to her program record for homers in a season with a two-run blast to left. Feehan answered in the third as Olivia Abren’s two-out double that center fielder Nina Sullivan nearly robbed with a diving catch scored Gwen Camara and Caitlyn Deveney. The visitors again rallied with two outs to break the game open in the fourth. Julia Cohen drew a leadoff walk and pinch runner Ayla Dolores scored on a wild pitch Deveney delivered the game-winning hit with a single to right that brought in Rebecca Fielding and Silva. Attleboro got one back in the fifth. Freshman Kaylee Magnan (2-for-3) doubled to left and scored on a two-out single by Callahan, but Feehan got it right back when Camara’s double scored Silva from first. Attleboro tried to put together a rally in the seventh. Maganan dropped a single into shallow right to lead off and Callahan came through with another run-scoring, two-out hit, but was eventually stranded at third with Ronayne (who would have been the potential tying run) in the on-deck circle.

Division 3
#11 St. Mary’s, 0 @ #6 Foxboro, 1 – FinalNatalia Leach’s leadoff homer in the bottom of the fourth turned out to be the lone run of the game, as the Warriors edged St. Mary’s and advanced to the Div. 3 quarterfinal. In a scoreless game, Leach lined the first pitch of the fourth over the fence in left to put Foxboro in front. St. Mary’s came closest to scoring in the fifth. The Spartans loaded the bases with one out and hit a deep fly ball that drove Jillian Slattery all the way to the fence in center. She was able to haul in a great catch for the second out and, after an appeal, the umps ruled that the runner at third left early, which ended the inning. Foxboro starter Vittoria Cuscia gave up a leadoff hit in the sixth, but the Warriors got a force out, strikeout, and ground out to end the inning. She closed the game with a perfect seventh, completing the shutout with five Ks, five walks, and only two hits allowed. Sophomore Olivia Jaworski went 2-for-3 and reached base all three times. Slattery, Brynn Allen, Emma Fisler, and freshman Mackenzie Crockford all had hits for the Warriors. Foxboro will travel to No. 3 Apponequet at a date and time to be announced.

Boys Tennis

Player of the Week: Mitchell Callender, Oliver Ames Track

Mitchell Callender
By HockomockSports.com Staff

Oliver Ames sophomore Mitchell Callender has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for May 26 through June 1. Callender is the 37th athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the 2024-25 school year and 10th in the spring season.

Callender continued his breakout season with a strong performance at the MIAA Div. 3 Outdoor Track and Field Championships that were held over the weekend at Westfield High. He took home the shot put title and finished second in the discus and third in the javelin.

“Mitchell Callender has established himself as one of the elite throwers in Massachusetts,” said Oliver Ames head coach Kyle Sousa. “With an undefeated Hockomock season in both the shot put and the discus, he was primed for a big showing when the competition heated up at the state meet. Even so, no one could have anticipated the 59-foot throw he produced to win the shot put title. Mitchell is testing some of the best marks ever produced in the Hock, and coming away from Divisionals with top three placements in three different events was incredible both for Mitchell himself and for the team.”

Callender came into the state meet on the back of an impressive showing at the annual Hockomock Championships held at Mansfield High. He won the shot put and discus titles and finished second in the javelin. At states, Callender won the shot put title with a throw of 59-5.25, which was four feet farther than he threw at Hocks and three feet farther than second place. In the discus, Callender recorded a throw of 164-4, seven feet farther than his winning throw at Hocks and just two feet behind the first-place finisher. The top two were more than 10 feet better than the next closest competitors. Callender finished third in the javelin with a throw of 165-1 (slightly farther than his throw at Hocks).
