Milford Pins Down Sixth Straight Sectional Title

Milford’s dominance at the sectional level continued on Saturday as the Scarlet Hawks rolled to the Division 2 Central sectional championship, the program’s sixth consecutive sectional crown. Milford had three individual champions, two more finalists, and five grapplers take third overall to earn 242.5 points. North Attleboro had two champions and five finalists for 195 points and the Rocketeers finished second for the fifth straight year.

Taunton, Sharon, and Foxboro also finished second in their respective sectional tournaments. The Tigers had two champs and had 170.5 points, finishing behind New Bedford (206.5) in the Division 1 South tournament. The Eagles moved to the Division 2 South sectional in the latest alignment and had one champion and three finalists for 167.5 points, just behind Somerset Berkley (171 points). The Warriors also moved in the new alignment and competed in the Division 3 Central sectional; Foxboro had three champs for 202.5 points, taking second behind Dedham (215 points).

Milford’s Derek Marcolini and Sharon’s Cyrus Jones both set program history, each becoming their respective school’s first-ever four-time sectional champion. Marcolini had two pins and two tech falls at 132 in the D2 Central sectional while Jones secured four pins in the 175 bracket in the D2 South tournament.

This year’s sectional champs from the Hockomock League include Canton’s Calvin Quinn (D2C, 106), Matt Morin (D2C, 144), and Owen Sasin (D2C, 215), Foxboro’s Josh Hindin (D3C, 190), JJ Blanchard (D3C, 215), and Evan Vieira (D3C, 285), Franklin’s John Woodall (D1W/C, 113), King Philip’s Nicholas Wendling (D2C, 138), Milford’s Brayden Boccia (D2C, 126), Derek Marcolini (D2C, 132), and Josiah Carney (D2C, 150), North Attleboro’s Zac Faria (D2C, 113) and Ryan Gill (D2C, 120), Oliver Ames’ Jonah Bornstein (D2S, 126), Sharon’s Cyrus Jones (D2S, 175), and Taunton’s Will Buffington (D1S, 215) and Ashton Vieira (D1S, 285).

Stoughton/Brockton, 1 vs. North Quincy, 3 – Final – A pair of first period goals put North Quincy ahead and the visiting Red Raiders didn’t relinquish the lead the rest of the way. Jake McSweeney scored for the Black Knight Boxers with assists going to Garrett Sager and Zacary DeSousa while Dmytro Yakovenko played well in goal.

Canton, 4 @ Medway, 0 – Final

Franklin, 2 @ Medfield, 3 – Final (OT)Franklin scored in the third to tie the game up but Medfield pulled out the win in the extra period. Julia Flynn opened the scoring in the first period but the host Warriors potted a pair in the middle period to take a 2-1 lead. Flynn grabbed her second of the game in the third to force overtime. Lindsay Dennett, Nina Ianuzzi, Haley Wernig, and Maddie O’Brien each had an assist for the Panthers.

King Philip, 2 @ Dedham, 3 – FinalKing Philip erased a two-goal deficit to force overtime but the Marauders prevailed in overtime. Dedham staked a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the second period but senior Kelly Holmes and sophomore Katie McGann scored third period goals to get the Warriors back in it. Annabelle Curran and Tayla McDuff each had an assist while Kiki Lynch made 34 saves for KP.

Mansfield/Oliver Ames, 1 @ Westwood, 4 – Final Mansfield/Oliver Ames got on the board at the end of the first period to pull within a goal but Westwood scored twice in the final period to pull away. The Wolverines jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Cammy Shanteler (from Annabelle Fanjoy) lit the lamp late in the first to make it 2-1. The second period was scoreless but Westwood finished off the win in the third.

Stoughton/Sharon, 0 vs. Boston Latin Academy, 4 – Final

Wrestling
Needham Quad (Sharon) – Sharon secured a pair of wins at the Needham quad, taking victories over the host Rockets (48-34) and Northbridge (58-18) with a loss to Weymouth (45-33) sandwiched between. Ashmith Yeruva, Nick Varvak, Cyrus Jones, and Matt O’Shea went undefeated on the day for the Eagles.

Saugus Quad (Canton) – Senior Ruairi Ritson went 3-0 on the day, winning all three matches via pinfall to highlight a 1-2 day for the Bulldogs. Canton dropped its first two matches to Northeast/Bishop Fenwick (49-27) and Peabody/Saugus (61-18) but ended the day on a high note with a win over Wilmington (32-27). Max Kupferman won two matches via pinfall while Matt Murin (132), Tiernan Ritson (157), Dan Harn (175), and Owen Sasin (215) each had one pinfall win.

Marshfield Quad (Foxboro), 9:00AM

Tewksbury Quad (Franklin) – The Panthers went up against some of the top teams in the state, falling to Melrose (54-30), Shawsheen (58-15), and host Tewskbury (60-18). Jack Rosenberger had a successful day with three pins while Riley Carlucci had two pins.

North Attleboro Quad (North Attleboro), 10:00AM

Milford Quad (Milford) – Milford swept the competition at its own quad meet while Robby Lyons became the third Scarlet Hawk to earn his 100th career win this season. Lyons (126) went undefeated on his way to the milestone while Dylan Wright (106), Derek Marcolini (113), Josiah Carney (132), Mikey Boulanger (138), Aidan Baum (144), Eder Gomes (150), John Hanlon (165), Luke Donis (190), and Owen Matthews (215) also went unbeaten. Milford picked up wins over Wellesley (62-10), Algonquin (57-10), and Hopkinton (63-10).

Norwood Quad (King Philip, Mansfield), 10:00AM

Sandwich Tournament (Taunton) – With seven champions and three finalists, Taunton dominated the Cape Cod Invitational for the second straight year. The Tigers took first overall with 244 points, comfortably ahead of Boston Latin (220). Michael Leskoski (120), Landen Rodriguez (126), John Mandeville (144), William Buffington (165), Kingston Dacosta (175), Ethan Harris (190), and Elijah Prophete (215) all won their respective brackets. Harris moved to 23-0 on the season and secured his 125th career win to become the all-time wins leader in program history. Gabriel Leskoski (150), Anthony Vieira (157), and Robert Tran (285) each took second.

Canton Tournament (Canton) – For the first time since 2019, Canton hosted the Jim Peckham Invitational and the Bulldogs placed fifth as a team. New Bedford won the tournament with 250 points while Canton rounded out the top five with 150 points. Max Kupferman (144) and Ruairi Ritson (190) both won their individual brackets, Owen Sasin (215) took second, and Matt Morin (132), Jacob George (120), and Seamus Brown (165) each finished third.

Methuen Tri-Meet (Taunton) – Taunton split the day, taking a convincing win over South Shore Voke (76-3) while falling to host Methuen (44-30).

Norwood Quad (Oliver Ames) – Oliver Ames went 2-1 at the Norwood quad, taking wins over Milton (46-33) and Boston Latin Academy (78-6) but falling to the host Mustangs (46-29). Shannon Tran (3-0), Jonah Bornstein (3-0), Taharka Parry (3-0), Willer Rossow (3-0)m and Logan McAndrew (2-0) all went undefeated on the day for the Tigers.

Algonquin Quad (Franklin) – Franklin returned home from the Algonquin quad with wins over the hosts (54-27) and Westford Academy (57-21) and a loss to West Springfield (48-34). Roman Caccavelli had a terrific day for the Panthers with three pins while Jack Sauer, Riley Carlucci, Charles Nash, Jack Rosenberger, Brandon Large, and Will Pritoni all had a pair of pins.

Cumberland (RI) Tournament (North Attleboro) – The Rocketeers crossed state lines and secured a seventh place finish at the John D. Gorman tournament at Cumberland High School in Rhode Island. New Milford (CT) won the tournament with 253 points while the Rocketeers recorded 137 points. For North, Joseph Brucato took second in the 144 lb. bracket, both Braeden Thrasher (120) and Braxton Ferro (138) were third, and Alexander Robin (132) secured fourth overall.

Weymouth Tournament (Stoughton) – Stoughton had a pair of wrestlers finish top three at the Weymouth Invitational and had 62.5 points as a team (14th overall); the host Wildcats took first place with 194.5 points. Sophomore Jack Gallan took a major decision in the first round and then had three straight pins to reach the final in the 138 lb bracket. Gallan had a great battle in the finals, battling back after falling down 10-0 but ultimately fell to top-seeded Nate Rosas of Pembroke, 18-11. Stoughton senior James Currier had three straight pins to start the tournament and then bounced back in the consolation match with a 6-3 decision to earn third overall.
